Results of the third Writing Challenge going up

Writing Challenge 3 finished

We've received some great entries for our third Writing Challenge, which will be going up in this thread over the next few days. The theme was 'What is the First Expedition?', and we're looking forward to seeing what the Expeditionaries and other entrants have come up with.

Here's an extract from one of the upcoming entries to whet your appetite

The Old Man of Rust and Bone

by Ogun

He had spent so long dreaming of the moment when he would stand on a new world for the first time and look up into an alien sky, that when it had actually happened he couldn't see it. The sky of Harubel Ceti IV was a thick uniform bank of grey cloud, and had been since he had got here. That was of course on those occasions when the trees were not blocking the view.
Guillaume had seen a forest once. The 5th Angevin Cohort, Solar Auxilia had been sent to Skandmark for cold weather training two months before finally shipping out. The ruptured domains of the Ettin enclaves had turned to a wolf haunted wilderness of dark winter nights and equally dark forests. The place had brought out an almost primal response in the cohort, the ancient instinctive fear of the shadowed forest, a fear passed on in nursery tales long after the forests had passed away. Out here, Guillaume could not help but be reminded of it.

Speaking of the Imperial Militia...

Following the release of Forge World's rules for the regular men and women of the nascent Imperium's army, lots of Imperial Militia have been popping up on The First Expedition. Why not check out Steders' fantastic army, which uses loads of the beautifully characterful Rogue-Trader era Imperial Army figures, and brings them right up to date with a cracking paintjob:
